How Steve Broke Smash Ultimate - A Character Analysis
Steve is likely the strongest character in smash ultimate and one of the most oppressive characters in all of smash history. But you may wonder exactly why? Today I will be taking a deep dive into one of the most divisive characters ever added to smash and a bit about the history of the character.

    The thing is, I’ve played Steve, and if you learn the moveset he’s great, but you really have to focus on playing nothing but Steve to get good, since his playstyle is so vastly different to every other character. I’d argue that Steve is way harder to learn than even Brawl Meta Knight. Certain moves of his are pretty good, but those moves require you to learn how to mine and place blocks effectively in order to utilize consistently. Steve is a character that rewards people who focus solely on playing him and learning his moveset down to the finest detail.

    most characters encurage interacting.. the risk reward factor is strong in ultimate, especially in the punish games. it's skillful to try and punish or take advantage of someone's position, more so to punish a punish. but steve's mining, attacks, and block placements activaly deny punishment, halt the game entirely, and is pretty much a free punishment for most potential punishments which is just the obsurdly frustrating part (not to mention the ability to place blocks in the AIR), and with his jank hit'boxes' along with his speed and blocks lingering for too long, it makes him so much more unfun to fight against.. kinda like day 1 kink k, but worse imo there's a few 'easy' ways to ballance steve, or at least make him more managable, and the first step is to lean more into minecraft's mechanics. smash leaning into a character's source for moves and mechanics is nothing new, and steve is no exception.. but they didn't lean hard enough, in turn breaking him. here's a few in game minecraft mechanics that i feel might help ballance the fighter (i'm a casual, not a pro, so keep that in mind) 1. remove the ability to place blocks in the air less there's a stage or other block connector piece (which yes also means his up smash & down air has to change in some way, perhaps changing moves around to better introduce some more, like a bow & arrow, or growing a tree using bone meal akin to Villager's down special) 2. upon death you lose your ENTIRE inventory (with maybe the exception of wooden tools/pick/axe/shovel) 3. THE COMBAT UPDATE. if he is to be powerful, inforce the combat update, not only encouraging crit points in the air, but also double down on his moves staling, being not as strong when spammed compared to feathering or spacing out your attacks, encuraging more skill outside of spam sword/axe/pick and just.. stage long carrying frustrations 4. and most importantly.. weaken the blocks placed. whiles it is infuriating to deal with as an attacker.. as a viewer, seeing a steve build a wall and pretty much stop all combat is so.. lame, more so given how free such a wall is, combined with the fact that the steve can more than easily abuse it for resources and a anti punishment. so having the ability to break those blocks faster would be fantastic. i could see it working depending on what is used on the blocks, explosives destroying all but iron (doing mass damage to iron of course), kicks and punches for dirt and wood, sword for dirt wood and coblestone 5. finally.. the crafting table. as a character representing a game known for mining and crafting.. you do a lot more of one than the other, and things you do craft are just weapons. and yes technically he does auto craft items like the minecart, tnt, etc.. but that's the issue, those NEED the crafting table and can't be made in your normal inventory. so what i could see working is, when steve is near or interacts with the crafting table he gets a menu akin to Hero's spell menu, allowing players to more than quickly select what they need to craft, just; equipment, tnt, minecart, & andvil. the 'equipment' tab having a priority: if you don't have a tool, it makes that, if you have all tools it upgrades your items in a given order depending on what resources you have relative to what your current tools are made of. from sword, to pick, to axe, to shovel, and diamond, to gold, to iron, to coble, to wood (first to last) really the only other ballance i agree with is something you mentioned, bringing the redstone into his up special to better ballance out its power. outside of that.. those're all the ballances i'd suggest, for as obsurd as a couple are i'm aware. though without play testing i ain't one to know weather they'd work well or not, but after dealing with steve even from a non pro playstyle... something needs to happen. maybe i missed something that might assist in ballancing him further so.. other theoretical ideas are appriciated

    I haven't played Smash since Terry was released but after seeing Steve's block ability I'll never play it again. They essentially tried to make sales by luring in more kids with Minecraft and Fortnite (his block placement in Smash is very reminiscent if Fortnite building), and in doing so have created a character that literally ruins the game. I see him boxing himself inside blocks. It's cutting out run animations and they absorb a number of attacks. That's just absolutely not the spirit of Smash.

    It always seems like the final patch notes for nintendo's competitive games are truly what make the games 'broken' in the end. While patches didnt really change too much for the first few smash games, smash 4 and ultimate did, and both games were left with broken characters at the end of the games life. The splatoon series as well, I've seen the metas change ever since its release in 2015, and both Splatoon 1 and 2 were left with horribly broken metas, with splatoon 1 being full of crazy invincibility and damage up existing. Then splatoon 2 ended with its special spamming, bomb spamming, and k52 gal. Im scared to see what will happen to games like Pokemon Unite and Splatoon 3, and so far both arent exactly promising😭

    People give Nintendo too much benefit of the doubt. Steve was deliberately made to be absurdly broken so that all the 6 years olds would buy him and be really good. If it was a relatively unknown character with hyper niche audiences, Banjo Kazooie for example, they would have been balanced like a regular character. Steve was made for zoomers to sell as many season passes as possible before they shelved the game. Simple as that

    Im just gonna say this: We should get a new fighting game thats fan built in a way where the Devs make characters... But leave in the dev tools so that fans can tweak characters if any are obviously overtuned or such. We kinda got this in smash with a unique thing in settings that adjusts a characters damage output.

    An easy fix for most of steve's problems is to make him MORE LIKE MINECRAFT. Nerf wood and stone damage and durability (also frame data slightly) Spawn inventory should be: - 5 wood - 3 Iron That's it. Wood can only mine up dirt and stone You need to craft a stone pick to mine iron Iron for gold and diamond Gold is there for combos but shit durability Diamond for everything And spawning a crafting table should use 1 of each ressource you currently hold, yes even diamonds and gold. Make him into the Phoenix Wright of this game, unplayable until he gets his ressources. He should suck with wood Be mid with Stone Okay with Iron Incredibly broken (for a short moment and at a huge price) with gold Undeniably great with diamond And fix all the glitches. Resetting the inventory is a mid idea, and would be an effective, but unhealthy fix to the current issue. Making steve a grind to get going is what I believe to be the core idea that Sakurai wanted to go for. Remove Anvil/Tnt mining. The only way he can get a crafting table to spawn on him (for free) would be to have it destroyed by the opponent. When steve dies his current inventory could drop onto the stage, he would respawn with the previously mentionned Wood and Iron, but without any wood weapons. That'd make him into a pretty solid character, that kinda plays his own game. Steve SHOULD be broken, not necessarily strong, but he should be bending the rules of the game to his desire. I wish that Sakurai had gone further in that aspect.

    The funniest thing to me is how none of this at all applies to Steve as a party game character. In a 4-player free-for-all, or even a 2v2, *everything* that busts Steve in 1v1 is dulled or outright negated. All your keepaway tools keeping you free? Not when there's never any room on the stage you won't be attacked by! You're probably getting more value out of diamond tools before they get used up than is justified? That's not helpful with 2-3 times the players you'd have to use them on! None of this is helpful in the 1v1, but it's why the devs probably never thought about nerfing Steve. Because doing so in the 1v1 context would almost inevitably make him less than useless in a party mode. *Those* game modes are much more _desperate mining noises_

    Lol I love how people in the smash community just arbitrarily change the definitions of FGC terms. Recovery frames are not called "Lag". Lag is something completely different. Also, a "broken" character is not just a character that is stronger than the devs intended. If that were the case half of all characters would be broken. Devs are largely ignorant of how characters will turn out in a competitive scene. That's just a fact. That's why so many games have so many updates and why they started bringing in some top or former top players to play test and show them what their characters can do. Broken means the character is so overpowered there is no point in choosing another character, making other characters nearly irrelevant when playing for serious stakes. Meta Knight was broken. Akuma in SSF2 was broken. A character is broken when it makes playing other characters pointless. Steve is not broken. Steve is strong and cheap, but not broken. Plenty of other characters blow him up, including my main Falco. Tilde has never lost to a Steve in tournament, for example.

    I think that a lot of Smash players have the same issue with Steve as TF2 players are with Sniper. Both play in such a way that there is no counterplay or refutation to them (A Sniper with coordinated teammates and proper positioning is IMPOSSIBLE to counter and can lock down entire areas of the map which must simply be avoided, completely controlling game pace; Steve's blocks are sufficiently durable that he can simply outspace you with physical barriers and make it very difficult to deal with). As Uncle Dane put it: "Sniper isn't overpowered, he's just lame." I think the same applies to Steve: He exerts incredibly strong pacing control, and his toolkit is so incredibly forcing under proper play that you basically must play how he wants or you'll just lose. He has a lot of Snake's strengths except without his juggling vulnerability due to anvil.

    11:41 Fun fact: Rocket hitbox of waft has the most knockback scaling of any move in the game. But it has fairly low base knockback that makes it weaker than most moves in practice Apparently theres also certain percentages, position and time where halfwaft actually kills sooner than fullwaft due to its superior base knockback beating full wafts knockback scaling

    Conspiracy Theory What if Microsoft told Sakurai to make Steve overpowered. There is absolutely no hard evidence to back this up, but this isn’t the first time Sakurai was accused of showing favoritism towards certain characters. For example, Kirby from Smash 64 was infamous for being stupidly broken, and some people thought that it was because Sakurai was the creator of the Kirby franchise. Also this isn’t the first time a fighting game was accused of showing favoritism towards certain characters. There’s conspiracy theory floating around that accused Netherealm Studios of purposely making Superman overpowered in the first Injustice game because DC wanted to promote their new movie, Superman: Man of Steel. Again, there is literally zero hard evidence for this, but it’s an interesting thought.
